Water Pre-treatment & WWTP for PLTU Malinau – An Integrated Solution

Clarifier Tank for Water Pre-treatment and WWTP system at Malinau Power Plant, North Kalimantan

Effective Power Plant WTP and WWTP systems play a vital role in the daily operations of steam generation facilities. Operators absolutely require integrated water management. First, this system maintains a stable clean water supply for cooling systems and boilers. Second, it manages liquid waste (effluent). Thus, companies can effectively prevent environmental pollution.

In 2020, PT Waskita Karya entrusted PT Mizui Osmosa Teknovasi with a strategic project in Malinau, North Kalimantan. This project demanded complex system integration. Specifically, the scope included raw water processing (Pre-treatment), demineralization, and the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

Design Challenges for the Malinau Power Plant WTP and WWTP

The project sits in the strategic industrial area of Malinau. Consequently, the main challenge involved processing river water with fluctuating turbidity. We transformed it into water that met strict operational standards.

Furthermore, in designing this Power Plant WTP and WWTP system, we followed Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) mandates. We ensured every drop of released wastewater meets quality standards. Ultimately, the goal involves ensuring the surrounding ecosystem remains undamaged.

Technical Specifications of the Integrated Power Plant WTP and WWTP

As a specialist contractor, we designed a total solution. Subsequently, we divided the system into three main stages to guarantee efficiency:

  • Water Pre-treatment – Capacity 45 m³/hour: This unit serves as the first line of defense. For instance, the process includes coagulation, flocculation, and filtration to remove suspended solids.

  • Demineralization System – Capacity 2 x 2.4 m³/hour: Then, we process the clarified water using Ion Exchange technology. As a result, we produce pure demineralized water for boiler feed.

  • Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) – Capacity 5 m³/hour: This unit handles operational liquid waste. The system neutralizes pollutant parameters like pH and COD. Finally, the water becomes safe to discharge into the receiving water body.

Benefits of Implementing Power Plant WTP and WWTP

We successfully handed over the project in July 2020. The implementation of this integrated Power Plant WTP and WWTP system provided tangible benefits. Specifically, it supported smooth operations at the project site:

  • Operational Efficiency: Stable clean water availability keeps turbines and boilers working optimally.

  • Environmental Compliance: On the other hand, the WWTP system guarantees operations remain safe from regulatory sanctions.

  • Ease of Maintenance: The centralized system design facilitates daily monitoring for operators.
